SAP BriefingHere are some ideas to try with the tools in your child’s Sensory Assault Pack (but you have to promise to give them back to your kids!) Sensory Assault Operations always recommends that our products be used to complement a sensory diet, not take the place of one. Is your child a Dr. Jekyll at school all day who turns into Mr. Hyde right when the last bell rings? Put the Nature Guy CD on in the car for the drive home from school. Ask as few questions as possible and limit conversation. Often with kids that have sensory issues, less is more. Does your child have trouble focusing or concentrating during homework? Try putting on the Nature Guy CD and have your child use the Smart Smencil to do homework. If your child is sensitive to smells, put the Nature Guy CD on and let your child chew on the Chewy Tube. Using a finger or hand fidget can be helpful to release stress. If your child has to constantly hold something in their hands, is always fidgeting with something, or is constantly touching things, have them hold the Tangle Relax Therapy. Once they start using the Tangle it is difficult to put down; the Tangle Relax Therapy has a soft gel covering with tactile bumps that makes it great to release stress or channel fidgeting. It can also help strengthen the muscles in the hand and wrist. Is your child a picky eater or have difficulty with fine motor skills? Using the Fishsticks at meal time can distract any kid enough to eat their dinner! Fishsticks can also be used to play games and practice picking up objects; they can also help to strengthen hand muscles used for fine motor skills and can be used to teach kids how to hold writing tools Does your child have trouble taking tests at school? The peppermint scent of the Smart Smencil has been shown to help people focus and improve testing. If your child is always putting objects in their mouth, try giving them a Chewy Tube to chew on. They were developed for jaw rehabilitation but have been found to be very helpful to children with developmental delays and neurological disorders. Chewy Tubes help exercise the muscles used for chewing and speech. The vibrations from the Mini Duckie Massager can help calm your child. The vibrations can also be used with pressure for input on the arms, legs, and back. Try just letting your child hold the duckie in their hands or toss it back and forth with them for a game. Turn the duckie on and set him on a table or flat surface—this is sure to win some giggles! The Find It game included in the SAP is mesmerizing to young and old alike! This game should go wherever your child goes; the bright colors that shift with every movement will catch any child’s eye. The simplicity and concentration necessary to find all of the objects hidden inside will keep your child busy. It’s also fun for them to just shake, twist, and turn! Many children with sensory issues crave pressure and weight. The Propaganda Pad is weighted for soothing pressure to help calm children. The weight gives input while the scent of cloves and cinnamon is comforting. Put the Propaganda Pad in the freezer for several hours or overnight for a cooling pad or into the microwave for 2 minutes +/- (depending on your microwave) for soothing warmth. Weighted pads have been shown to help children focus and sit through circle time in preschools and even kindergarten. The encouraging and interesting posters screened onto the Propaganda Pads will subtly cheer your child on! |
